The challenge

The goal was to measure the length of the body, or parts of it, of premature babies while they lie in, for example, an incubator, based on camera images.

That calls for software that works with different industrial cameras, runs on several operating systems and can be operated on a touch screen next to the incubator.

What I did

Together with a second developer I built the software in C++, in cooperation with Computer Engineering and Industrial Design students.

Two cameras provide images from which OpenCV computes a 3D point cloud. After a stereoscopic calibration, using live camera images or stored samples, the user marks points and distances are calculated in real-world units. The interface is built with Qt, works fully by touch and runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.

Cameras are driven through GenICam (using Aravis) on Linux and macOS and through the manufacturer’s drivers on Windows. Samples can be imported and exported, images as JPEG and results as CSV.

The software is a research project and has not been tested for use in a production environment. The source code is public on GitLab .

Results

  • Working research prototype for stereoscopy-based measurement
  • Runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, with touch-screen operation
  • Supports several types of industrial camera
  • Open source under the Apache 2.0 licence
